Why Dorm-In-A-Box is so good for the Environment!
A Paradigm Shift In The Way That Students Secure Their School Essentials Is The Basis For Efficiency, Less Waste, And A Greener World!
Transportation Model
Because of our efficient Dorm-In-A-Box business model, goods bypass the traditional shipments to two, three or even more warehouses. Goods are shipped directly in a shipping container straight to your university.
Fuel Saving
If every student enrolled in a typical four year university in America used Dorm-In-A-Box, 8 million gallons of fuel would be saved annually. Typical Students visit five or more retail stores and drive 25.8 miles to purchase their school essentials.
Dorm-In-A-Box Eliminates
At a typical Top-100 University in 2010 we expect to eliminate 28,625 pounds of packaging waste, 64,500 miles of senseless and redundant automobile travel associated with the purchase of residence hall essentials, as well as 72,500 pounds of CO2 emissions added to the carbon footprint. Lastly, we will eliminate the consumption of 3,750 gallons of gasoline which has an enormous impact on geo-political and national security issues.
Packaging
Dorm-In-A-Box products use minimal packaging because each item is bundled in a reusable container with little or no individual packaging. This means far less consumer waste. In 2010 we expect to eliminate nearly 500,000 pounds of landfill waste compared with traditional packaging.
Eco-Friendly
We strive to build Dorm-In-A-Box products with the environment in mind. For example we minimize processes utilizing caustic bleaches, opting instead for natural, unbleached cotton canvas products in our closet and storage products. Most importantly we build products that provide years of service well beyond the college experience, so Dorm-In-A-Box products won’t end up in a land-fill in just a few short years. Significantly, 78% our survey respondents feel that environmental issues are of moderate or high importance. 71% of students are recycling “often” or “always” while away at college.
Labor Friendly
We subscribe to the International Labor Organization (ILO) guidelines and implement our own Ethics and Manufacturing Statement Standards. With on-site personnel available for unscheduled factory visits, we ensure production quality, humane working conditions, and environmental audits.
Get Involved!
Although newly launched for 2010, Dorm-In-A-Box has already contributed several thousand dollars to on-campus environmental action groups in pursuit of lobbying efforts as well as campus-wide sustainability measures. We have engaged several University Sustainability Administrators to promote grass-roots efforts targeting conservation as well as the responsible and efficient deployment of natural resources.
